I built a big, modular ship in orbit recently for interplanetary travel. I planned to add a nuclear engine at the bottom for better long-range thrust, but it doesn’t seem to be drawing fuel properly. It’s secured with several decouplers, service bays, and some hitchhiker cans between the engine and tanks. I tested this setup on the ground and it functions well, but in space it won’t fire or recognize the attached fuel. The main difference between the ground and space configurations is that the space version was assembled in orbit while the ground one was built in the VAB. Could you have any suggestions?

By default, fuel does not pass through decouplers. You must enable fuel movement via them. They also accept only liquid fuel.

One component of the nuclear section lacks fuel passage and thus doesn't function. You must transport fuel lines from the docking to the engine. Or, you need to turn on fuel passage through the decoupler.

I have all of the couplers set the same for fuel pass through as they were on the land test. They all display "disable crossfeed", I also tried with them all saying "enable crossfeed" but that did not work either. There is no way for me to run fuel lines with a ship assembled in orbit. I could do that in the VAB but this one went up in pieces and I often swap that bottom section out when I unlock new stuff.

Don't assume the storage unit has fuel pass-through. Alternatively, check if the primary craft includes a fuel pass-through.
