I purchased this iMac and need to know its current compatible OS. For the boot setup, I should consider using either a dual-layer DVD or a USB drive.

Looking for clues in the datecode might point you to the right Mac version. Checking that link could give more details about supported models.

Consider checking the year of your Mac to determine compatible operating systems. Reviewing this will help identify what software it supports. Updated: If everything was set right, your device likely belongs to the late 2006 era, which suggests it may not support certain newer applications. Which system is currently active?

It supports Mac OS X versions up to 10.7.5 Lion. You may be able to update to 10.8 or 10.9, though it's not recommended. These older systems are already quite sluggish on Lion.

Get the patch and possibly install the newest MacOS Big Sur, even if your iMac isn't officially backed up.

Big Sur isn't compatible with this iMac. The 5,1 model from 2006 only supports Lion and performs poorly. Trying to run Mavericks or Yosemite would be difficult, and overall performance would be lacking.

Alright, understood. The limitations become clear when considering performance requirements. I typically run my software on a macOS virtual machine, which demands around 4GB RAM and two CPU cores to function properly. For genuine performance needs, bare metal setups would require similar resources.
