I recently assembled a new PC. Everything functions properly, yet I soon observed the hard drive producing a scraping sound when shutting down. I captured the audio at the two-second point: http://sndup.net/kk6d. Even with the case open, the noise remains audible when the case is closed and the drive sits on my desk. The specific drive is a 4TB WD Blue 3.5" (WD40EZAZ, SMR, 256MB cache, 5400rpm). I returned the drive recently, and a replacement was sent. Yet, the new unit is making the same noise. I used the Western Digital Dashboard tool, which indicates the drive is operating correctly. Crystaldiskinfo also shows no problems (refer to attached image). While hard drives can generate sound during operation, this particular issue hasn’t occurred before. Is this typical or am I unlucky with two faulty units? My system runs Windows 10 Home, 64-bit. MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk AMD Ryzen 9 5950x, NVIDIA RTX 3090 Founders Edition, paired with two 32GB G.Skill Ripjaws V (F4-3600C16D-64GVK) and two 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus Corsair RM1000x units from 2021.

Same audio quality here, and the noise during file transfer on the HDD is more intense than my old Western Blue 1 TBB. I've had it for two weeks now.
Hi there, in the end, Western Digital didn’t want to swap my HDD and suggested I buy another one for regular data backups if I wanted to keep things running smoothly. The seller also told me the noise I heard is typical for this drive, so I had no other option but to stick with it. So far, everything seems fine. I also found a review of this HDD on a Chinese video site. During the demo, the sound was captured, which matches what’s described as the usual noise for this particular hard drive.
