I changed my CPU last night from a Ryzen 5 2600 to a Ryzen 9 5900x and the BIOS worked fine. I started a game but didn’t see many frames, so it didn’t seem like a real upgrade. Checking the specs: Ryzen 9 5900x with MSI RTX 2060, two 8GB GPUs, Corsair Vengeance RAM, and MSI B450M.
It seems your CPU might be overheating. I encountered similar issues with my 3600, which would not reach full boost and would downclock often. You could consider upgrading the cooling system or trying undervolting the processor. The 5900x is an impressive chip (really impressive) and should handle better performance. Based on my experience, a first-generation Ryzen unit feels much cooler compared to later models.
it’s the stock cooler from the 2600, and the temps on the MSI afterburner indicate the desktop is around 50-55°C during a game. They’re near 75°C, and I believe the maximum temperature is set to 76°C.
That's why. You need a cooler that will actually keep up with the 2600. There's quite a bit of difference in what they draw for power. Almost double.
Your maximum temperature setting at 76°C means your CPU is likely reducing its clock speeds to stay within limits. A small wraith stealth cooler won’t fit properly on a powerful 16-core processor. I suggest a larger model—something like the Noctua NH-U12S or a scythe Fuma would work well. Edited December 28, 2021 by Fasauceome
