Sure, you're right. It makes sense to either get a solid understanding of the topic first or just boost the hardware if you're not ready to dive in.

Zen originally features 4 cores per CCD, meaning the user's CPU will manage 4 CCDs with one core inactive. Most Threadrippers come with 4 CCDs, which defines their role. Models like 2970WX, 2990WX and 3990X offer 8 CCDs. For early-generation regular Zen, the 1800X down to 1500X use just 2 CCDs. To activate "gaming mode" on a first-gen Threadripper, you must disable 3 of them. (Note, the 1950X retains all four full CCDs.) Switching to three Zen cores with a 7900XTX will create what some might call a poor experience.

It was released incomplete, with only half the CPU functioning properly for gaming. That means you’re mostly stuck with a Ryzen 1500, which isn’t doing much to improve performance. Unfortunately, your setup isn’t advancing further, and there’s little point in trying an upgrade.

Thanks for the responses! Seems like you're sharing it with your nieces and making some upgrades to your setup.

Yeah, I realized the first-gen only supports 4 cores per CCD max. So for a 1920x image, there are two CCDs per CCX, making a total of 2 CCX. But it still disables three CCDs? I thought game mode only affected one CCX. That seems like the optimal move.

CCXs are part of the Zen 2 architecture. With Zen 2, each CCD features 8 cores and two 4-core CCXs. Earlier versions like Zen and Zen 3/4 lack CCX support. In Game Mode across all Ryzen models, only one CCD is active to reduce latency. On consumer Ryzen systems, this equates to turning off a single CCD. For Threadripper processors, it means disabling either 3 or 7 cores based on the specific chip.

This setup involves multiple components working together. Each CCX provides four cores, and the TR 1920X model uses three of them. The CCD die contains two of these CCX units and has two dies, with one die being disabled in Game Mode. Overall, the TR 1920X functions similarly to a Ryzen 1600 with specific configurations.

It seems you're right about the Zeppelin die utilizing a CCX model. Switching to "Game Mode" would upgrade it to a Ryzen 5 1600X. It's still not ideal with a 7900XTX, but it's an improvement over just three cores.
