I attempted to put thermal paste on the CPU but the fan part got stuck on the motherboard and caused a spark. Now it doesn’t turn on or charge, yet I sense heat after a short while. Could this mean the motherboard is damaged?

Have you noticed any scorch marks? It might be a part that can be swapped out, though the entire panel seems destined for disposal in the large e-waste heap above.

No, the battery wasn't taken out during your work on the internal components.

Consider removing the battery from the motherboard and the CMOS battery, disconnecting them for 5 to 10 minutes, then reconnecting to test functionality. If it doesn’t power on, the board likely needs replacement. Otherwise, fixing it may not be feasible.

All of that area is essentially power delivery, it's where the battery connects to the motherboard, if it sparked there and it isn't powering on at all even with removing the main battery and the CMOS battery you're out of luck. Sorry to say but your motherboard is toast. This is the number one reason why you always remove the main battery when working inside of a laptop.

I observed a person on YouTube repairing an item by removing a capacitor.
