The motherboard is making a loud buzzing sound.
While I'm here, I notice a faint buzzing noise from your motherboard when your PC is idle. When you begin stress testing the CPU, that sound disappears. Could this be coil whine? Is it normal and safe? I made sure to rule out the GPU and PSU as possible causes.
It doesn't match coil whine, typically it becomes louder under higher load. A sound video would help, as it might show a vibrating fan causing the buzz, and the changing speed reduces it. Still, a motherboard can make noise, and mine has some background hum that’s fine.
I don't believe it's a fan since the behavior isn't steady. I'll attempt to record it tomorrow, but the audio sounds like a series of short bursts. It begins and ends repeatedly.
It triggers right away once I ease the load on the CPU. If it was the fans, they’d likely kick in a bit later because they need time to settle down.
My gaming laptop sits in my profile, the Asus Strix G17 is a grumpy machine even when idle and it gets worse when unplugged. For the first minute it caps at 8 watts and it complains, but once it hits its full 25 watts the noise stops. When it's off and not plugged in, only the fans make a faint whine—can't adjust that and it's quieter than the usual coil sound. Plugged in and idle, things get worse. Setting the fans to 2% makes the CPU spin at 2k RPM and the GPU at 1800 RPM; full speed brings them up to 6k RPM for the CPU and 5600 RPM for the GPU (this matches what Asus Armory Crate reports).
