Observe the details at 20:40 in the video: 135w at stock speeds, 260w during heavy overclocking (5.1 ghz across all cores). A bit of light overclocking could push performance to roughly 170-200w. It's fine to use a single 8-pin connector for such power draw. For the 260w usage, it remains safe, though adding the extra 4-pin connector would be preferable.
I need to mention that certain boards need both an 8+4 pin EPS connection or they won't work at all. Most boards handle just the 8 pin, but premium models often require both. It's helpful to distribute the current through several additional cables, particularly when overclocking Intel Core processors.
They don’t appear to need anything special beyond the usual 12 and 8 hardwired connections. After that, there are two cables with PCIe ports. You can check the details on the Corsair website if you want more info.
It seems some people are reacting differently, but I don’t think using a Molex adaptor is necessary if you’re concerned about safety. Adding the 4 could definitely give extra peace of mind. For a compatible cable, it doesn’t have to be strictly Corsair Type 4—just make sure it matches your TX line’s requirements.
It doesn't clarify why the Molex adapter isn't necessary. I personally use mine on my Maximus X and 8700k without any problems. The same cable also worked for my K8NDRE dual socket 940 pin board, and I even used it with a PCIe connection while running quad fire 4850s.
You might suggest buying the whole power supply to ensure you have the extra connector, even if you don’t think it’s necessary. A Molex connector could be a backup in case the connection isn’t fully secured or fails. It’s better safe than sorry—any component can fail. Using a Molex isn’t a good excuse for skipping steps.
Worked with this setup for roughly two years. It uses a 4850x2 configuration powered by two single-slot Asus 4850 modules. Sadly, I had to switch to Molex connectors during that time.
