The monitor appears dimmer than expected and seems to have deteriorated suddenly.
I connected my PC to the ASUS PG279Q monitor and logged in. Within thirty seconds, the screen became noticeably dimmer than before. After reattaching both cables, the issue persisted. The display appears less sharp on the left side, with gray edges looking blurry and colored rather than solid. Over the past couple of years, image retention has been poor, and this seems to have worsened things. It looks like the problem started after a Windows update—maximizing brightness and contrast didn’t help, and the settings remained unchanged. I’ve shared photos comparing the left and right sides, showing the overall color tone and the central black area that’s always an issue. I suspect the cleaning process might have gone wrong, but it’s not the main concern today. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It's tough to interpret from these images alone. A complete screen view would have provided better context. Could the backlight be dead or dying? Are the bit depth, resolution, and refresh values correct in the Advanced Display settings? Should the display be factory reset?
Updated the image. The darkness on the left side is the new issue. That section appears less defined rather than a solid color like the right side. I assume it's a backlight, but I didn’t expect it to be that noticeable. I checked images of the whole screen going completely black, needing a flashlight to see anything. It’s unclear if the backlight explains the strange color problems either. The bit depth (8-bit as listed on spec sheets online), resolution, and refresh rate seem correct. I’m not sure where the factory reset option is located.
I'm also seeing similar things with my PG279Q. For about 2 months now I notice moderate image retention if it displays a static image/HUD for more than 5~10 minutes as well as some significant dimming and dark spots (mostly when the monitor is waking up or powering on). The back lighting becomes fairly normal after a solid ~10 minutes of being actively on. I wonder if there's a cap on the board that's dying on these? I notice in your picture an especially dark circle in the middle, which mine also has very visibly on startup (though it's easy to ignore once the thing warms up a bit). I bought mine in Oct 2017. If you figure anything out let me know. I'm probably just going to have to wait until it becomes unusable and replace it at this point. What a shame, it's been my favorite monitor so far.
