The MIDI device often loses connection and appears unrecognized in Windows, yet functions properly on Linux?
I own a Novation Launchpad MK II MIDI Controller with a slightly unstable USB port. When I move it, it sometimes disconnects temporarily. On Windows, this results in a total loss, and when reconnected, the system reports it isn't recognized, while Device Manager displays an error about a failed descriptor request. To fix it, I have to repeatedly disconnect and reconnect the device until it stabilizes, but even then, any slight movement triggers the cycle again. On my Chromebook, the connection is much more stable—plugging it in works perfectly, and gently shaking the cable briefly causes a quick reconnect without issues. This inconsistency makes me wonder why Linux might handle brief USB disconnections better than Windows, and whether there’s a solution to stabilize this behavior.
You mention an unreliable connection issue. It might be at either end of the USB cable—either the Launchpad side or the computer side. You aren't always sure which end disconnects when you move it. If the problem stays consistent on one side, it could point to an issue with the socket or the contact points between the socket and the cable plug.
Next, adjust your wiggling technique. At the Launchpad end, only move the solid, larger part of the connector at the end of the cable, not the flexible part. Do the same at the computer end. If this resolves the issue, the fault is likely in the socket or the contact area.
If that doesn’t fix it, try a different approach. At each end, hold the plug firmly in the socket and gently move the flexible cable around. Experiment with various positions along the cable—starting close to the plug body and moving outward. If this causes the problem, you likely have damaged wires inside the cable, and replacing it should help.
If these steps don’t eliminate the issue, consider another possibility: the power supply. The Launchpad unit draws power from the computer USB port you connect it to. An older USB2 port can provide up to 5 VDC at 0.5 A, while a newer USB3 port can deliver more—up to 0.9A. You might try switching to a USB3 port if available.
Additionally, if you’re not connecting directly to the computer’s USB port but through a hub, other devices connected to that hub could be drawing power. In that case, connect the Launchpad unit directly to a computer USB port instead of through the hub.
