The Microsoft .NET Framework could be causing your PC to run slowly.
I left my PC yesterday with a game open (EAFC24) while I went shopping for food. When I returned, the system felt unstable, freezing intermittently. After restarting, the issue disappeared. Later that day, I resumed playing and it repeated—screen would freeze for about a second every 2 to 3 minutes. Eventually, I turned off the PC and fell asleep because it was late.
Now, when I turn it on immediately, it runs slowly without any crashes. However, the screen still freezes occasionally. No error messages appear, so I can’t pinpoint the cause. The Event Viewer reported a few errors, including an unhandled exception, but details are unclear.
I’ve looked into similar issues online and found many users describing the same behavior—system hangs sporadically. Common fixes mentioned were downloading and running the .NET Framework repair tool from Microsoft, using DISM and sfc commands, or performing a clean Windows installation. Before that, I considered formatting the drive or upgrading to Windows 11.
My questions: Should I proceed with a full format and install a fresh OS? Would switching to Windows 11 be better than sticking with Windows 10? My hardware is a Ryzen 5600X with an ASUS RX 6700 XT graphics card, Gigabyte Aorus Elite X570 RAM, and a 10th Gen processor.
With Windows updates, I often noticed slow performance on those Microsoft patch Thursday days...
I believe you addressed the issue without realizing it. After reviewing, I found a cumulative Microsoft .NET framework update two days prior. It was still over 24 hours before my first problem. I attempted a system restore using one from when I updated the motherboard chipset last month, and after restarting, a pop-up stated it couldn't complete due to file access issues. Likely, an antivirus—Microsoft Defender and Malwarebytes (non-professional scans)—was blocking it. The PC seemed to resolve the problem once the restore was attempted, with no lingering hangs afterward.
