Your friends' computer produces this loud noise like a boat motor. It occurs during games, emails, and YouTube. I ran FurMark and Prime95 together but didn’t get the sound under heavy use. I also checked Crystal Disk Mark; the hard drive seems fine. Noted issue is GPU fans not all turning on at low load (0 idle, 1 under some load, 3 at full). This might be normal on newer cards. I told them to gently stop each fan if it happens again to check if one is causing it. Any ideas?
Yes, 0RPM GPU fans are common now and shouldn't cause problems. It might be that the fan is touching something, so removing the front panel could help identify the issue.
It seems like a failed bearing in a fan, likely a case or PSU fan.
The footage shows clear visibility, yet any obstruction would likely produce consistent background sound.
The silent bearing might cause varying sounds, but a dead bearing usually produces consistent noise.
They might be able to. The inability to see any fans in the video while the boat moves quickly suggests the PSU fan could be faulty or obstructed. Depending on the model, it likely includes a 0RPM setting, similar to the RM750x in my server, which activates intermittently even under light loads of 60-90 watts. A quirky point: the full ATX unit does this too, while the SFF EVGA unit in my regular PC only starts spinning up around 140-150 watts. Computers have their own quirks, hehe.
