Reset SMC and NPRam shutdown, press shift + power for a moment... release its on apples site for npram... don’t recall that right now.

It seems like it might be an HDD issue. @Prastupok's suggestion is also worthwhile.

It's hard to say for sure, but it's possible the MacBook could be overheating.

Sorry to hear that this didn't fix the issues. After resetting the SMC, the screen went back to low resolution, but when it restarted it returned to its original high resolution.
