You're experiencing an issue with your WD850X 1TB NVMe drive. It seems the drive was initially detected in the PCIe 5 slots but disappeared after rebooting, then reappeared when inserted into a PCIe 4 slot. The fact that it works in a PCIe 4 slot suggests the problem might be related to driver configuration or compatibility settings on your motherboard. Since your motherboard is an MSI Mag X670E Tomahawk Wi-Fi, ensure you have the latest drivers installed and check for any BIOS updates. Also verify that the drive is properly seated in the correct slot and that no other devices are interfering with the detection process.

I would consider refreshing the BIOS and the drive firmware, as many reports mention problems with MSI and 850X regarding the CPU slots.

It's a brand new device, and I just updated the BIOS before this. Previously, I had a 980 Pro 1TB SSD that worked fine. I'm considering returning it to save money. Would using an 850x PCIe4 slot connected to the chipset affect performance noticeably?

The SN850X isn't a PCIe 5 port, therefore it's not applicable.

Sure, let's clarify that point.
I wasn't entirely confident about the importance of staying connected to the chipset.

You may notice variations when using multiple NVMe drives since they compete for the same bandwidth and PCIe connections. The CPU, on the other hand, utilizes its own dedicated PCIe lanes.
