For the last six months I've been enjoying "The Last Of Us" at 4K Ultra settings. My setup includes an i9 13900K, an RTX 4090, 64 GB of RAM, and a 1000W power supply. Occasionally, when I increase the render scale to 200, it demands up to 19 GB of VRAM, yet I still manage 20-30 FPS. Yet, whenever I try a render scale of 200 recently, I consistently encounter CTDs. I've reinstalled the game and switched to an older GPU driver version, but nothing has changed. Meanwhile, other demanding games run smoothly or benchmarks like 3DMARK without issues. For instance, playing Far Cry at ultra settings and high resolution uses up to 18 GB of VRAM while maintaining 40 FPS, or Cyberpunk at 4K native Ultra settings with RT overdrive gives 25 to 30 FPS. Concerned about a potential GPU failure due to overheating, I removed the adapter and checked it—everything seems fine. It's definitely an unusual issue, but anyone have suggestions?

Please forgive my inquiry, but could you clarify what "CTD" refers to? I'm not sure if this is something I should be worrying about or if I'm misunderstanding.

Have you reviewed Event Viewer or Reliability History for any relevant data?
Are you keeping track of temperature readings?
Do you consistently remove dust from the computer system?

Temperatures stay between 60-62 degrees C. Regarding the dust, I purchased my PC in February and perform monthly cleaning. To examine the Event Viewer and reliability history, follow the appropriate steps.

Why are you increasing the render scale to 200% when you're already running at 3840x2160 resolution? This could be a sign that performance isn't up to expectations, even on your powerful setup. The drop in frame rate might suggest it won't deliver a satisfying experience. It's possible the issue stems from earlier test results at lower difficulty levels, which didn't reflect the full gameplay load. I believe most people would consider 20-30 FPS unacceptable, whereas you're aiming for something better. Despite having a high-end GPU, pushing it to such extremes is unrealistic. Just because your hardware is strong doesn't guarantee it can handle everything you throw at it.

Thanks for the patience. I just did and all the error reports trace the source of the problem back to the game's executable: tlou-i.exe
However, there are no explanations as to what exactly caused it to fail.
Well, during these past months, i could start the game with a 200 render scale any time, or change it mid-game, no matter the part, and it would work just fine.
It's only during these last few days that i can't do it.
Maybe you 're right and i shouldn't do it at all.
It just seems weird that there's suddenly no way to do what i could easily do np, so i just got worried that there's something wrong with my GPU.
But most probably it's insignificant.
Thank you both for taking the time to reply.

As mentioned, I've played the game a lot and wouldn't consider 20-30 FPS as satisfactory. Even when it dropped to 45 FPS for me—though not during intense combat—I noticed clear lag and stuttering.
I'm not sure you grasp how handling such high graphics settings at 200% resolution, especially on a 3840x2160 display, must be challenging.
