My device (2024 XPS 15 9530) often powers off unexpectedly when I carry it around. Normally I take it off the desk, disconnect it from the dock, place it in my bag, and go to class. Most days it shuts down even though I set it to sleep the night before. The same problem recurs during class. After a day of use I’ll put it back in and it will restart, then immediately shut down again—sometimes displaying loading or boot messages. I’ve checked drivers, BIOS updates, and Windows is using the latest version. In Event Viewer I see errors related to power transitions when it’s connected via Ethernet versus Wi-Fi. The logs mention issues with Intel miniport and Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct adapter. There’s usually a quick Windows restart afterward, sometimes within seconds. My guess is something about Windows Modern Standby might be causing it to exit and re-enter standby before I close it, leading to the shutdown. Anyone have ideas?

Mostly I rely on sleep mode to conserve power. Keep it going smoothly between classes.

The Windows modern standby feature isn't always effective at putting a laptop to sleep. Likely, your device is overheating when carried around or is constantly running, which can drain the battery.

Laptops need airflow, which suggests they might overheat. It could be due to software problems, but most issues seem linked to temperature.
