He had a Samsung Ativ 9 that ran slowly. He attempted to reset it to the original settings, but during the process it stopped and displayed an error: "File corrupted, restoration could not be completed; Do you want us to fix it?" He agreed to proceed. After restarting, the laptop booted but then showed a black screen. He tried a BIOS force boot, but couldn't locate any options. We're considering purchasing a new operating system and attempting the restoration again. What are your thoughts?

it's either windows 7 or 8 depending on your license. the bios should support formatting with the same Windows version you have. backing up data is recommended, and using a linux boot drive for backups can help. in your laptop documentation, include a CD with the Windows version you're using and try it out.

I'm here to help. Could you provide more details about what you're trying to do?

You can initiate a support ticket with Samsung to obtain recovery DVDs. Essentially, they should perform the reinstallation and reset everything to its original settings.
