The laptop is producing unusual sounds.
I own a Zephyrus G14 from 2024 with a 32GB RAM, 4070 model. It began producing some unusual sounds, but the fans weren’t making noise. I opened up the laptop and ran it for a while; when the sound started, I manually stopped each fan to identify which one was causing the issue. It seems the fans were fine, and the noise likely came from the CPU side, possibly near the heatsink. Someone might help me troubleshoot this problem. The laptop is still under warranty, but I’m worried about getting further damage and don’t want to visit a service center—there are people who aren’t knowledgeable, and I’ve had a bad experience before.
I never used a G14 so take my opinion with a grain of salt... Fans were obviously the first thing to check. And you say that none of them were making that noise. If you made sure there wasn't an hidden fan you missed, let's clear that cause. Since the G14 is a modern laptop, it probably has no other moving parts like a spinning hard drive or a DVD reader. Am I right ? Of the other things that can make noise, there are the speakers. Either a sound is playing through the speakers or the sound system is picking up noise from electrical interference. You should be able to determine if the speakers are the source of the noise with your ear close to them. There is the possibility of the infamous coil whine. That one is caused when current is passing through an inductor or near some metal parts. If the part has a tiny bit of slack, then it can vibrate and cause the noise. You can't see it with the naked eye and touching the part isn't a reliable way to detect it either. One thing than may work is changing the worload on the computer. Like running a CPU stress, then a GPU stress. If the noise changes, then it is probably coil whine. Not much can be done to mitigate coil whine but it is possible to RMA for exchange in severe cases (like yours). There is also the possibility of electrical noise in the power outlet. Is the noise the same when you run the laptop from battery and plugged in ? If you try another outlet (or at another house/place) is the sound the same ? That's about it for my ideas today. Frankly, this sounds like a failing fan bearing to me but you ruled out that issue so I just don't know. Good luck !
