Hi! I might need to bring this laptop in for service, but I’m wondering if there’s anything I can attempt myself or if swapping the battery could help. I think I have a spare one.

I purchased a Dell XPS 9560 refurbished, which had some problems so I returned it. When I got the replacement back, it was labeled as a Dell Precision 5530. The refurbishers said they replaced the motherboard, and the parts match an XPS 9560. That’s correct.

The warranty is gone, and the laptop hasn’t been used much. There was a minor issue with starting up, but it’s gotten worse. Now the laptop doesn’t power on at all.

Here’s what’s happening:
When I press the power button, the keyboard lights up for about 30 seconds before the laptop shuts down. If the power adapter is connected, you’ll hear a fan noise for 30 seconds. Without the adapter, only the keyboard lights up for 30 seconds. The screen fails to turn on. A hard reset doesn’t help. The power and battery status lights stay off, nothing changes no matter what I do.

In my opinion, this suggests the battery is fully charged—or possibly it’s dead.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ensure the CMOS battery is present first, then test the main battery using a basic multimeter. If it doesn’t provide sufficient voltage, replace it. Also verify the AC adapter’s voltage.
