I have a laptop that hasn't fully started since 2019. I didn’t fix it because I had another PC, but I’d like to try fixing it for my sister. In 2019 I spilled water on the laptop, cleaned it up quickly and everything worked fine, then the next day it shut off unexpectedly when I tried to turn it on. I think maybe some water remained uncleaned or there’s a motherboard problem. I’ve kept it in storage until now, and when plugged in the power cord the light is on but turns off when I press the power button. I know it’s not an HDD issue since I’ve been using the internal drive as extra storage on my PC, and I’ve put it back in when trying to start it. There’s no visible damage inside the laptop. I’m curious if there’s a way to check the problem myself?

Well, the battery being in storage an unused for a long period of time is not a good thing. Maybe you can remove the battery and then try booting to see if it does anything. As for water spill, it is bad news. Since you used it the day after it was soaked, it is entirely possible that there was still liquid water on the circuit board and then you fried something when you tried to power it up. It is entirely possible that it left to visible clues. The best way to get a definitive answer is to bring it to a repair shop and ask for an estimate.
