I assembled my present gaming setup in December 2020. My component list includes an i7 10700k, a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Windforce OC with MSI MPG Z490, an Enermax Aquafusion 240mm AIO graphics card, a liquid cooler, an EVGA 220-G50750-X1 Super Nova 750G5, and an 80 Plus Gold 750W PSU. The system also features a 16GB Corsair Vengeance 3000Mhz 2 2.5" WD SSD, M.2 WD SSDs, and a WD HDD. I have three monitors connected via the GPU. A CPU temperature monitor is installed, but occasionally my core temps spike between 45 and 100 degrees during web browsing. The spikes are brief, but they intensify when I play games. Even at idle, my clock speed remains high. After disassembling the tower, everything appears correctly installed and dust-free, including the AIO CPU cooler. I’ve been using this build for nearly a year and a half, experiencing minor performance hiccups that prompted me to investigate overheating. Recently, my PC has started shutting down unexpectedly and reports overheating during startup. Online advice suggests my AIO might not be sufficient for the i7 10700k, especially given the environment hasn’t changed. I’m worried about permanent CPU damage after all this time. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
Enermax has faced several problems with their AIOs in the past. A 240mm unit should suffice to maintain the 10700K's temperature, but it seems the AIO has likely failed. These units often get clogged, and even though they circulate liquid, it offers little in cooling the chip. I’d consider returning it for repair, though they might just send another that will also fail. Regarding damage, the shutdowns are meant to protect the CPU and prevent further harm. It’s not ideal, but it should be acceptable.
You confirm your AIO is functioning properly by listening for its expected sounds, even if it's not operating at full capacity.
I noticed the fans spinning and the liquid flowing as proof it was operating. But maybe that doesn't always mean it's functioning correctly.
According to @RONOTHAN##, Enermax hasn't performed well recently. The micro fins on the CPU block are probably blocked.
They're operating well. The last update was about an Asetek rebrand, meaning it should behave similarly to most other AIOs available except for Artic and EK.
