Welcome to the forums! That is so you can easily pull off the chipset heatsink. Leave it alone unless you need to do that. I have seen these on laptops I have repaired on M.2 and WLAN card heatsinks. Is there anything else under that? Perhaps, well, M.2 SSDs or WLAN card slots?
Thanks! Your setup is responding quickly—great job. This is my first project in over 12 years; I’m swapping out an Intel Q6600, which is still functioning perfectly. Just wondering what’s inside, probably a chipset, since the manual mentions a fan for extreme overclocking.
LGA775 user, great! It seems there might be another option with a fan included. You probably don’t need it unless you’re building your own processor and the northbridge would get damaged. (The chipset should be simpler than the Lakeport/Broadwater you’re used to, so no major changes needed. You might safely remove the tab if it bothers you, but I’d recommend leaving it on.)
I think I got it just right with that setup—Sapphire 3870, HDD, PSU all working perfectly. It won’t handle newer or heavier specs than DEAD SPACE 3 or SKYRIM. I’m being careful about potential issues and have the PC build guide handy. Thanks for the quick replies! I’m starting with the CPU installation, which uses an LGA socket.
