Since updating my processor (and previously an Athlon II 255 and FX8350), my computer has begun to restart unexpectedly. I initially suspected overheating, but testing with demanding tasks and a full CPU load resolved this issue – the system remained stable. However, during typical activities like web browsing and gaming (where CPU usage rarely exceeds 50%), the computer spontaneously shuts down. I am currently suspecting a problem with my power supply unit, although it functions adequately when running the older Athlon II 255 processor, leaving me uncertain about its status.

During my investigation of that specific motherboard model, I discovered the MSI 760gm-P23 (FX) is listed. If your model lacks the "(FX)" designation, it likely did not originally support FX processors at the time of its release. The inclusion of "(FX)" within the model number might stem from later support added through BIOS updates, and considering it's an older motherboard design, updating to the most current BIOS version is recommended regardless. The latest BIOS release is H.G., accessible at https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/760GM-P23-FX. MSI recommends using Chrome, Firefox 3.0, or IE 8.0 or newer browsers for downloading BIOS, drivers, and other related files. Here’s how to utilize M-Flash to update your MSI motherboard BIOS.

This processor is clearly a newer design, so it's important to examine your motherboard’s support website to determine if there is a BIOS update available which adequately supports older Athlon processors. Could you please specify what motherboard you are utilizing?

Examining that specific motherboard version, the only model I discover is MSI 760gm-P23 (FX).

If your board lacks the “(FX)” designation after its model number, it likely couldn't operate with FX processors at the time of manufacture.

The inclusion of “(FX)” within parentheses may signify that processor support was later supplemented through BIOS modifications. Considering the motherboard's age, updating to the most recent BIOS version is recommended regardless, as it’s likely not currently at that latest iteration.

The newest BIOS version is H.G, accessible here: https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/760GM-P23-FX

(MSI recommends utilizing Chrome, Firefox 3.0, or Internet Explorer 8.0 and above for downloading BIOS files, drivers, and other resources.)
