The problem involves my main rig using a Ryzen 7 3800X on an MSI MPG x570 gaming edge Wi-Fi with Windows 10 on a 250GB M.2 NVMe SSD (M.2 key). My goal was to set up a server with the three components and switch my main PC OS to a new 1TB Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe SSD on an MSI MPG B550 gaming edge Wi-Fi paired with a Ryzen 9 5900X. Everything else stayed consistent. I installed a fresh Windows on a hard drive, inserted both NVMe drives into the x570 board and used EaseUS Todo to clone the WD drive to the 970 without running the OS. I placed the 970 in the B550 but it didn’t appear as a boot option, though it showed in the BIOS. With both NVMe cards on the x570, the 970 was set as primary boot and the WD as secondary (same files). The system failed to boot from the 970 and fell back to the WD. The WD also didn’t show up in the B550 BIOS. The BIOS version on the B550 is current, last updated on May 25, 2022. Assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated (as discussed on Reddit, there’s a thread with more attempts). Additional details: when testing on the new board in the gaming rig, I couldn’t boot from the original WD drive either. I tried converting it to a GPT and cloning that version to the 970, but still couldn’t get the gaming rig to start. After reinstalling both drives on the server, I could set the 970 as first boot, the WD as second, and a temporary Windows install as third—then it booted from the temporary drive. I cleared the 970, put it in the gaming rig, and used a USB boot drive to install Windows. The installation proceeded, but restarting automatically went to BIOS without showing the drive as an option. I’m considering whether the issue lies with the drive itself or the motherboard.
