Imagine a game I haven't played in a year that gets three updates—first at 5Gb, then 10Gb, and finally 15Gb. Will the total download size match the sum of all previous patches (30Gb) or might it be less?

It depends on whether the developer implemented a thorough patching system. Likely they didn't, so beginning from version 1.0 requires updating each version individually. But if you use services like Steam or Origin, downloading a new game will provide the most recent version.

Not necessarily.
Someone might remove the older version and replace it.
Or another might place it on top of the previous one.
Or both could happen.
But usually... if you haven't updated much, the latest will have all the earlier versions in it.
Or not...

It's good to hear, but my internet is really slow and those big files are taking forever. I'd rather wait and download 20-30Gb each week instead of waiting 20 hours for just 20Gb.
