Hey, I got a notice from my ISP that they are upgrading all internet in our building to Fiber. I don't know if the speed will go up yet. Right now, their old router and DSL modem sit in the dining room. The ethernet ports on those devices are 1Gbps. The router is hooked up to the TV. I'm not sure if they'll replace the router with a better one too. My computers are in another room. In the last few months, some of you suggested connecting my stuff and my NAS directly to the old router. But I said that can't happen because family members would get mad about running wires across rooms. Maybe this is the perfect time to make some changes. Also, I want to connect my computers via 10Gbps speed. Do I need to buy a new switch? Based on what I have above, what should I do during this building upgrade? Should I ask them to move the router to my computer room or keep where it is but get another one?
You don't need to change anything right now. Just let the internet service provider handle what they say is needed. If they tell you you need a new router, then buy one. But if not, leave your local network alone for now. Sometime later... The NAS will be right next to the router. No wires running across the room between them. Your computers will keep connecting exactly how they do today. Wired connections are better, but if everyone else needs WiFi for their stuff, then just wire that part up too. "10GbE" WHAT? This means you need a new switch and LAN ports on all your devices, plus cables everywhere.
Who is your Internet Service Provider? When my ISP upgraded my house with fiber optics, we had a long talk about where to install the line and where to place the router. If they let us pick the spot ourselves, then yes, put it in whatever is most comfortable for you.
