The internet feels slower when using an Ethernet connection on your PC compared to Wi-Fi on your phone!
I recently purchased a new PC and connected it via Wi-Fi, but the speed was slow and unstable. I switched to an Ethernet cable, yet the connection remained poor compared to my phone’s performance. Even after getting Ethernet, internet speeds were still slower than my mobile data. If there’s a fix I could find, I’d really appreciate it. I tried adjusting settings in the network tweaks section, but it didn’t noticeably improve speed or ping. I’m not too concerned about download/upload rates; what matters most is ping, which stays around 120 in Rocket League. Since I have fiber-optic internet at home, I expected better performance, but it still felt sluggish.
OS - Windows 11 is the full retail edition I bought from a store. System was set up around 2022. Installed OS around 2022. Hardware includes a Ryzen 5 3600 with InnoCore 360 and RTX 3060, using an ASUS Prime B550 motherboard, Corsair 650W power supply, and 80 Gold case.
Welcome to the forums! It seems your sub 10ms pings are quite low—should we consider this a strong signal? I’d probably reinstall drivers for your network cards, checking sources from the motherboard maker or board manufacturer. Could other PCs using hardline connections show similar issues? Likely there’s a problem with your router or modem. A fresh Ethernet cable might help too, though it’s unlikely to be the main cause. If none of this works, try booting from a Linux USB drive and running a speed test. If that resolves it, you may have a faulty Windows installation. By the way, it’s intriguing you’re using fiber with a hardline connection while only reaching 20Mbps.
I received fiber-optic internet and consistently experience 25ms latency in various games (4ms on speedtest). You definitely have room to improve. First, identify the issue. If you believe your phone has better connectivity than your computer, it might be software slowing it down. Try testing your internet on another machine or connect your computer to someone else's network. Next, verify if your device is using the internet for updates or software installation—this can be turned off in settings. If nothing resolves the problem, consider using a live Ubuntu USB drive and running speedtest.net through a browser. This will let you skip Windows entirely. Regarding Wi-Fi performance versus Ethernet, it was faster at one point but now it's not the case. As long as your signal is strong, modern routers usually match or exceed wired connections. Good luck!
I replaced the Ethernet controller driver again. It’s the same component, just reinstalled.
It seems there might be interference with your internet connection affecting performance. Checking Task Manager can reveal if bandwidth is being consumed by other processes.
