Hey everyone. On my MSI i7 8750H laptop while playing Doom 2016, I’m experiencing temperature spikes reaching up to 94°C, though most times it stays between 85°C and 90°C. If this gets too hot, I’m considering undervolting with Throttlestop. I’ve noticed different people getting various temperature readings and wondering what voltage adjustment to start with—maybe try -100mV on both core and cache, see how it performs, and adjust gradually. I’m not very comfortable opening the laptop or doing a full repaste.
If you manage it, I’d try it. I lower the CPU and GPU voltages on my MSI card, using the CPU light load mode. Do you have that setting in the BIOS? Edited December 6, 2025 by leclod
My previous laptop that had that cpu ran hot, it's just inherently a thing with the 8750H gaming laptops in my experience. Repasting it helped mine a little but definitely give the cooling a good clean. 94c is within safe spec though, so nothing serious to worry about but a mild UV helped a little if you want to try it. Load temps in the 80s to 90 is perfectly fine.
Determine the appropriate -mV setting for your cache and core based on your cooling setup and typical temperatures. With a laptop cooling pad running at midrange speed, you're experiencing spikes above 90°C, but your actual range is usually between 85–90°C. Adjusting to around -30mV should help stabilize performance without overcooling.
Post a screenshot of the ThrottleStop FIVR window. Some laptops have had BIOS updates that can block undervolting. You also have to disable Windows core isolation memory integrity. Some users prefer maximum security so having to do this might not be what they want to do. https://www.makeuseof.com/windows-11-disable-vbs/ Undervolting can help reduce CPU temperatures but your temperatures are already OK as is. If you do want to give undervolting a try, set the core and cache to a negative offset of -100 mV. This is a good place to start testing. Almost all 8750H should be 100% stable at this reduced voltage. When you press the Apply button, your Offset undervolt request should immediately show up in the Offset column of the FIVR monitoring table. If you are using HWiNFO, you will need to restart HWiNFO after making any voltage changes in ThrottleStop. HWiNFO does not update the offset voltages it reports in real time.
