I built an i7 8700k with a Strix Z370 and a cooled rock 3 lx system. It handled 90s under heavy load at 4.3ghz for about 100% capacity. The thermal paste was applied using the spread method—what’s going on with those temps? I’m really frustrated with this setup.
This indicates it isn't due to thermal throttling. The 8700K can reach up to 4.3GHz across all cores at stock settings. Since the Pure Rock 3 LX is a single tower cooler and the 8700K retains thermal paste beneath the IHS instead of solder, this behavior seems normal.
the cooler handles up to 190 watts while the processor uses about 105 watts, yet it still manages to maintain performance. i often check youtube tutorials for similar setups and see they usually run at around 70 degrees. that’s pretty impressive!
Isn't your space quite warm? Many users keep things around 21°C, but if yours is 40°C now, expect about 20°C warmer. This assumes proper airflow and the same fan settings. Note: I’m joking about the cooler being a 190W model—definitely not as effective as a dual-tower setup like the Scythe Fuma 2, which handles my 5900X better even at higher power if needed.
The engineers at Intel who built the CPU you're using today are not the ones you're interacting with. Your current safe operating temperature range is up to 100°C under standard conditions, provided the CPU stays below that and boost clocks aren't throttling due to heat. If you need extra margin for overclocking or prefer cooler temps, consider upgrading your cooling system or adding more liquid cooling.

If you're sure you can fix it, it only requires a knife and thermal paste—no need to reattach it since the socket’s retention should hold it in place if done properly. Back in the day, there was a notorious forum where they bulk-purchased these, removed them, applied paste, and then resold them with huge markups because many were chasing unrealistic specs like 5GHz performance across all cores without any real effort.
