I'm not confident about the validity of the benchmark. You might be curious why an 8th gen i7-8550U (per userbench) behaves like a 6th gen i5-6400. The i5-6400 is a desktop processor with a 65W power draw, whereas the i7-8550U is an ultrabook with just 15W. Even though their specs look alike, the i5-6400 consumes significantly more power than the i7-8550U. Despite being newer and more efficient, the i7-8550U still lags behind the i5 in performance. The differences in architecture and generation explain why they don't match up despite similar paper specs. However, the newer chip can improve over time as technology advances.

It's accurate, though performance differences remain around 10-15% in the worst cases—mostly due to variations in thermals, CPU, and RAM. Nvidia worked hard to align their desktop and mobile GPUs with the original 1000 series. This gap widened after they introduced the 1000 max-q lineup. Eventually, they abandoned that approach with the 2000 series, making a GTX 1080 still the second most capable GPU compared to the RTX 2070 and RTX 2080 max Q.

Before facing a faulty laptop operating at peak heat, remember mobile GPUs often lack clear naming. Keep refreshing your knowledge—this chip history isn’t always straightforward.

I'm experiencing issues with my i7 8550u. While its peak performance seems acceptable, it tends to throttle quickly. The fans don't ramp up properly, and it reacts sensitively to battery levels. It's unclear whether the problem lies with the CPU or the power management in my notebooks.

Hello, it seems your laptop is experiencing thermal issues. This problem is common among notebook users who lack adequate cooling, affecting overall performance. Based on what you shared, there are two possible approaches to lower your temperatures slightly. First, consider undervolting the CPU. There are numerous YouTube guides and tutorials that can help reduce those high temperatures. Second, you might try reapplying thermal paste. This process is more complex, requiring you to open your notebook and remove some parts, but it’s a viable option if you have experience. Please be aware of the risks involved—both methods could void your warranty, and I’m not liable for any damages resulting from these steps. I’ve personally tried undervolting, which is less risky than reapplying paste. If you feel confident in handling your laptop, reapplying paste could also be a good choice.

It might be a problem, but it isn't the only one. The fan curve doesn't appear steep enough; it usually accelerates only when needed. Battery performance is also unusual—power drops even at full capacity, then the fan kicks up suddenly when battery drops to 10-15%. I haven’t found a way to control the fan myself. I use Linux, but there seems to be no driver available for this component. It might be handled entirely by the notebook firmware, or Linux just lacks support. I remember installing more RAM and it helped, so opening the case could worsen things. I’ll try to avoid that when possible. This will be something I consider further. Thanks!

My 8550U performs similarly to a desktop 4790K according to CPU-Z tests. That’s quite impressive and definitely not a waste of money. https://i.imgur.com/gybEEUk.png The scores you see online usually come from users who don’t know how to optimize this processor. On the right laptop, they can run continuously well past their 15 Watt TDP limit. Just find a method to manage the heat. https://i.imgur.com/eo0J744.png

The results focus on typical consumer activities rather than just gaming or specialized tasks. This site offers helpful data when understood correctly, though it differs from official passmark scores. Use it alongside other sources for a clearer picture.
