Hi,
My i7 2600k has been running at 4.2GHz for years without any issues on my Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3. Recently, the power button stopped working and got stuck, causing the system to think the OC failed and revert settings. I left it for a month since I didn’t need the extra speed.

After returning, I reverted to the original settings and wrote them down. But whenever I try these new settings now—42x multiplier, no turbo, Normal vcore with -0.050v offset—the PC boots at 4.2GHz, then drops to 3.4GHz once it hits Prime 95.

I also updated the BIOS but didn’t see any changes. Trying to disable the OC and keep it at the default 34x multiplier with turbo also resulted in a drop to 3.5GHz at startup, then back to 34x after P95.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

It was strange when I opened up the PC. There was a bit of dust since I cleaned it earlier this year. After restarting, it maintained 4.2GHz in P95 for over 30 seconds, which gave me some reassurance. However, it then fell back to 3.4GHz. The temperatures were normal around 50°C, and the turbo was turned off, so I don’t think there’s any unusual overcurrent issue with the turbo disabled. There’s also a "CPU Over Current Protection" setting that seems unrelated to the turbo function. I couldn’t find much information about it online. Anyone know what to do?
Keep that on, I’ve already overclocked my CPU to 4.5ghz 2600k.
Though maybe you should check if there’s a BIOS update for your motherboard.

Fine, mid 50s P95 small FFTs.

With time things don't perform as well as before. Have you considered cleaning out your motherboard/CPU? These small accumulations can stop things from working properly. It's also important to gradually reach the original performance level. Try testing an overclock that is 10% lower than your current setting and observe the results. If the same issue appears, reduce it further by another 10% and test again. Good luck!

Quarkzquarkz :
With time efficiency drops, you might want to clean out your motherboard/CPU. These small accumulations can stop things from running smoothly. Also, keep working your way up to the original performance. Try reaching an overclock level that's 10% lower than what you had before and observe the results. If it behaves similarly, reduce the drop further and test again. Good luck!
Yes I understand this, though I expected it might still support the 3.5GHz stock turbo. I’ll open the case now to check the situation.
