After five years with my old i7 gaming rig, I chose to upgrade. I got an MSI MEG x570, AMD Ryzen 9 3950X, and HyperX Predator DDR4 4600 4x8 GB RAM (paired with a Sabrent SSD). Everything works normally at the default 2400 MHz. When I increased it to 4600 MHz for Cinebench testing, the system froze during boot, showing a CPU error on the display while the fan spun loudly. I’m new to MSI boards and unsure if I made a mistake. I’m concerned about buying this high-speed memory for over $1000 and it only functioning at 2400 MHz. Should I return the RAM, or is this just a setup issue? Please advise, John.
The series of Zen indicates that the CPU memory controller ensures stability at 3200MHz. The motherboard can handle up to 5000MHz memory. You'll likely need to manually adjust overclocking parameters like voltages and timings for stability—don't rely solely on XMP/DOCP profiles. Auto won't change voltages; you must configure the XMP or DOCP profile first to test its effectiveness.
The DOCP profile isn't clear to me, but I notice the XMP setting is off. Currently, memory usage is at 2400. I plan to enable XMP and keep other settings automatic.
Several users are facing challenges with high-frequency memory performance on Ryzen processors. Many struggle to reach speeds beyond 3666 MHz with dual modules, let alone four.
First, confirm the motherboard is compatible with your purchased RAM. If not, it’s understandable they might have made a mistake. You could manually tweak the timings with the Ryzen RAM calculator. However, 4 sticks of 4600MHz memory may be too demanding for this specific board.
Adjust XMP settings temporarily and check posting status. Verify the CPU frequency via CPU-Z at your desktop—aim for around 2300MHz for optimal 4600MHz performance. If not, consider a short break. Once resolved, share steps to fine-tune it toward 4600MHz or near it. Note that Infinity Fabric reached its best balance at 3600MHz, though I’m still exploring this personally.
I used the 2XMP profile at 4000 MHz, it started up properly and Cinebench ran smoothly. My score fell from 8547 to 7524—something seems off.
