The HP switch fails to reset.
I recently got a used HP procurve switch and went through the reset steps for port 1 to port 2. After connecting my laptop, I tried using the default IP but couldn’t connect. I’m unsure why it won’t reset or what I might be doing incorrectly. Edit: HP Procurve 1800-24G (J9028A)
Model number or J#### number is required for identification. Most Procurve switches from the past ten years follow these steps: use pointed objects, press both Reset and Clear buttons at the same time on the front, keep pressing Clear after releasing Reset, let the Self Test LED blink before releasing Clear. "Reset" restarts the device. Holding Clear during boot clears settings and resets to defaults; holding it while power is applied achieves the same effect.
It's an HP Procurve 1800-24G (J9028A). I would have sent that initially but I was on my phone writing the post.
You checked the correct steps for setting up the switch. The IP address and subnet mask you used on your computer when trying the default IP are important details. You also confirmed whether you entered http://192.168.2.10 to avoid automatic HTTPS routing. For your reference, the instructions were: 1. Take the power cord off from the back of the switch. 2. Link port 1 to port 2 on the front panel with a regular network cable. 3. Plug the power cord back into the rear. 4. Hold off for at least 40 seconds before switching ports.
You entered the IP address correctly, but the subnet mask remains 255.255.0.0.
What's the IP address of your computer? Also, did you disconnect the cable between 1 and 2 after the 40-second period ended?
Assign your laptop an IP address within the same subnet as the switch. This ensures connectivity without needing a default gateway or DNS services. After connecting to the switch, adjust its IP to match your network’s subnet.
