Hidden networks aren't automatically safer, but I choose to keep them concealed mainly to minimize complexity. With 300 individuals using their phones nearby, that cuts down on unnecessary connections to an SSID they’d rather avoid. Naming a network "hacking_test" or something similar tends to keep students from getting too interested. If I’m feeling uninterested, I’ll leave some traps active. Alternatively, I can guide script kiddies to a distracting landing page or restrict traffic to just 10bps on the fake SSID. There are many ways to make Wi-Fi security a challenge. Keep sensitive networks on the 2.4GHz band with a spread of at least 40MHz. Most iPhone users won’t be able to connect anyway—lol. Also, SSID battles can be entertaining at home.
