If that computer store obtained the key from a source other than Microsoft, it might be faulty. And if you previously used it on your PC, the key could have lost its validity after that use.

There’s no clear explanation here. I’ve discovered that the Microsoft Recovery page doesn’t accept OEM keys. Many users still rely on OEM copies for their custom-built PCs, even me.

OEM parts are limited to a single motherboard. Have you placed it on a different machine or changed your existing board?

I'm starting a new setup but don't have the original disc. I'm using an ISO file instead. It seems like Windows 10 is coming soon, so maybe I'll upgrade then.

The process is causing confusion between activating the key and the operating system using the key. The issue lies in using the Microsoft Software Recovery Tool, which is only compatible with retail Windows licenses and distributed through Microsoft. As an OEM or system builder, you must have the Windows 7 disk. To reinstall Windows, insert the disk, boot from it, and install the OS. For repair, load your Windows 7 disk into the system, boot from it, and choose the recovery option rather than installing. Select "Repair your computer" instead of the install button. If you've lost your OEM Windows 7 disk, this is your responsibility due to Microsoft's reduced support and pricing strategy. You must obtain a genuine, unmodified ISO for Windows 7 64-bit of the correct edition from an authorized source.

I thought that was reasonable. As I mentioned earlier, I’m likely holding off on Windows 10. Perhaps I won’t make the same mistake next time and will keep the copy.

Yea wait for Windows 10. Here is what I do normally. I have an external drive, and the first thing I do is make an ISO backup of the disk, put it on the external drive in a folder, and add a basic text file with the serial code. This is my backup of Windows, if anything happens to the disk or box. That external drive has basically all my ISO backups. I also have a shelf section specifically used for Game disks, Windows and software box. So I basically have my WiiU games, then followed by CoD MW2 which I bought as a disk, Batman Arkham Asylum, Batman Arkham City, Windows Vista boxes (for each of my systems at the time), and Windows 7 Upgrade boxes. Windows 8 was purchased online during Microsoft offer upon its release. Was like 40$. So that one I have no disk, just the ISO. Hope this helps.
