Last night I tried to install Apex Legends but suddenly my PC shut down unexpectedly. It seemed like it had stopped working completely, and I had to power off the power supply unit (PSU) to restore it. I’m using a WD Black SN770 that’s been with me for two years. This problem has happened before, but reseating the drive resolved it once. Now it doesn’t work. I’ve updated the firmware, erased all data, reformatted the drive, and even swapped its slots, but nothing helps. Since this was my main storage, I switched to a new SSD which functions properly. I contacted Western Digital’s support, hoping someone experienced could assist faster. I checked the drive’s health with CrystalDiskInfo and the Western Digital Dashboard; both show high health scores—94% and 98%. I ran both quick and full scans through the Dashboard and got no errors. Yet I’ve noticed an odd behavior: the system only crashes when connected to Wi-Fi. When I’m disconnected, it stays stable until I reconnect online.

Hmm There is a known issue with Win 11 24H2 and that drive (and possible other ssd without a DRAM). Read about it here https://www.hostzealot.com/blog/news/how...ssd-issues I don't know if this is what you're experiencing, it could be since you were installing thus writing alot at once to the disk. That could've triggered the issue when it borrowed the ram for caching. On that page I mentioned there's some registry tweak workaround.

I attempted this, but the result wasn’t successful. Could you share more details about the situation? When the system fails, the display goes dark while the RGB indicators remain active. It won’t fully power down until I disconnect the power source. I’m unable to use the shutdown button or reset switch. The device functions normally without the SSD installed. I swapped it with a vital P3 component.

It seems the issue might be related to Wi-Fi connectivity. You experience no problems via Ethernet, but problems arise when the device is completely disconnected.

It depends on whether it's connected or not. It won’t crash when offline, but it fails when powered on. It’s been working smoothly since I installed it. If it doesn’t work, I’ll consider returning it for repair.

They might approve the return merchandise authorization for the drive. Sometimes issues arise where no problems are detected, but the customer refuses the warranty. Have you tried running the drive on another computer? Consider asking a friend to lend their machine if you don’t have one available.

Thank you for the feedback. Yes, I’ve already tried the WD Black SN770 SSD in another PC (my brother’s machine) and it performed well without any problems. I managed to complete tasks such as downloading games and running applications smoothly. This shows the SSD works fine elsewhere, so I believe the problem lies with my current system configuration. Since it functions elsewhere, I think there might be a compatibility concern between the SSD and my setup. I’ve already gone through several troubleshooting steps—changing M.2 settings (from PCIe Gen 4 to Gen 3), updating drivers, resetting the BIOS, and even replacing the power supply. Despite these efforts, the issue remains when using the SSD in my main PC. I’ve reached out to Western Digital for an RMA and shared all the details, hoping they’ll consider returning it based on this information. If anyone has faced a similar situation or has additional advice, please let me know. Appreciate your support!
