It’s true that many people notice issues with HDDs when running a lot of mods. The problem isn’t just random—it’s often related to how the drive handles heavy loads. Some users report crashes or freezes, which can be linked to storage limitations rather than just being an error. M.2 drives are generally better for performance, but HDDs still struggle with too many mods. It depends on your specific setup and usage.

Hard drives used for mechanical storage take much longer to access random data compared to basic flash memory. Programs that depend a lot on frequent reading and writing of tiny files perform better on solid-state drives.

It wouldn't be just any software; you must specify "lots" together with the data size and how often it occurs.

Hard disk drive in general, heavy modded game, overall I'm just talking about it in a broad sense.

Yes, but I understand you're wondering if a slow hard disk drive leads to freezing in heavily modified games.

From my perspective, a general game or mod is something that runs smoothly without significant performance issues. If the game or its modifications are already stored in RAM from a hard disk and don’t need to be loaded again during play, then the storage medium doesn’t impact speed or drive efficiency.

Usually a heavily modified title will perform much worse than one originally built with optimizations in mind. The outcome is a game that looks unremarkable yet relies heavily on unnecessary, bloated code to operate. Essentially, you're forcing the software to work harder than necessary, which doesn’t improve its appearance or performance compared to simpler, well-optimized games. Even popular titles like Cyberpunk 2077 can struggle with limited storage, and it’s likely they won’t match the visual quality of a cleaner version. In short, poor software design is the main problem, not the storage capacity. Adding code randomly usually leads to sluggish performance.

Good PCs today rely on SSDs, and enthusiasts have favored them for over ten years now.
