I recently purchased a 5TB Western Digital drive, brand new with no problems. The installation was straightforward, and it’s mainly used for storing movies and TV shows. Since I don’t have internet on board (being a sailor), the drive works well in terms of plugging in and being detected by my PC. However, once recognized, everything becomes unresponsive. When unplugged, the eject option appears, but when I try to open files, the file explorer freezes and crashes. I attempted formatting, using cmd with diskpart, PowerShell, and even restarting, but nothing works when the drive is connected. Scanning for viruses didn’t help either. It seems Windows 10’s system and antimalware are consuming almost all my disk space when the drive is recognized, usually after it appears in File Explorer. I’ve lost around 1TB of movies and important job-related data. I’m unsure what to do and would appreciate any advice. Other HDDs are functioning properly.

Is it a 5TB internal drive or an external one?
I suspect you've inserted a lot of pirated files inside, possibly with harmful malware.

I did, he said he merely copied some movies and that was all. The next time he tried again, he faced the same issue.

It seems like the HDD might have been dropped, causing damage that could lead to such issues.

I overlooked that, when the file explorer runs without issues and the green progress bar completes, a warning shows the parameter is wrong.
