My work laptop is malfunctioning (the power plug is actually smoking). I managed to replace the old HDD with a new one, but it’s not functioning properly—just boots and restarts, then attempts a repair which always fails. I used bootrec, system restoration, and chkdsk, but none worked. The new HDD works fine on my personal machine. Since the new HDD is reliable, I need to keep using it for work. Please advise next steps. Error codes:

Start the system using an installation CD. After reaching the first screen, press Shift+F10 to open the command prompt and execute: bootrec /fixmbrbootrec /fixbootbootrec /rebuildbcd. Reboot then check if it boots correctly. If not, we can proceed with dismounting the drive.

It seems difficult to switch HDDs between laptops or from laptop to desktop for boot purposes due to driver conflicts. You might try using the Linux Live version to recover data or set it as a secondary drive on your desktop. To make the HDD function with the operating system again, you'll need to reinstall the OS.

You're trying to change the HDD between laptops, but it seems the driver problem is more significant than just starting Windows. You mentioned handling large image files, which adds to the data volume.

I ran the first two commands previously, but missed the last one. I’ll try again and check if it works.

It's mainly about the drivers and specific laptop configurations. Unless both machines are exactly the same, the differences in how they start up are minimal.

It seems you're acknowledging your decision. I replaced the previous storage device with a new one from my laptop, mounted it in a tower, and connected to it using Wi-Fi for access.
