I've done some more testing on my side. I can reliably cause this fault with 3DMark's DirectX Raytracing Feature Test. Interestingly, its not during the benchmark, but once the benchmark is complete. This, along with the error, indicates to me that the card is either waiting for a state change, is trying to do something, but failing at the state change, or is a 2D Clock issue. The only things I haven't done at this point is a different system or a different PSU. I just don't think its a power issue. Maybe RGB or something but I don't have anything running to control that. Anyway, posted for reference for anyone else having this problem.

@s373ns identified the problem, at least for me. It involves a Windows Power Setting named PCI Express Link State Power Management. Disabling it resolved the issue. You can also: A) Switch Windows Power Plan to High Performance (from Balanced), or B) In the Nvidia Control panel, under Manage 3D settings, set Power Management Mode to Prefer Maximum Performance. Cheers

Created an account to thank @Camm for the solution—I faced the same problem too, hoping it would resolve it. I’d share what made my computer extremely stable during tests, but it would freeze when I logged into Windows or similar. I’m wondering how you discovered this, having tried different approaches. Does Windows provide logs that could help with such issues?

It seems to me this might have begun after updating drivers and BIOS, specifically regarding XMP settings (instability there was initially, but turning it off didn’t fix it). I’m not certain if it was a prior problem (I built and used the PC nonstop, including heavy rendering in Blender) or something new. The BIOS update notes mention a fix for NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 PCIe speed issue, which is relevant here.

As a quick update for anyone who might be having similar issues: While Gigabyte haven't commented on it anywhere I can see, they seem to have taken down the F6 bios versions from the download page on https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X67...10/support . Not sure if that's indicative of there actually having been an issue, or they just forgot when updating the pages. I asked them about it on reddit, but they haven't responded.

I saw an unexpected error besides the 0 code in the event viewer. This guided me toward past Nvidia chips where power management problems appeared after startup. Over time, I learned there are four factors that regulate video power: Nvidia Drivers, Windows PCI link configuration, Windows Power Settings, and UEFI options that manage PCI power.

Hi, I'm facing the same problem with my 4090. The driver 522 would cause monitors to shut down and then the system would restart. This happened 5-6 times in about 10 minutes or once every five days. Driver 526 resolved it but created another issue—now I'm getting a BSOD with "DPC Watchdog Violation" as the crash reason. This could be linked to GPU driver problems with my hardware. I know it's my card since I've used the 3080 for two years without this issue. I'm planning to try the PCIE power settings suggestion from @Camm and will report if it helps. I'll wait a week or so because some crashes still occur every five days. Also, if a new driver comes out soon, we'll know what to do. But I'm not hopeful since the latest one was just released a few days ago.

Well... it didn't hold up very well. I thought I was fine, but my power settings were maxed out on Windows, which added to the issue. It crashed right when I was about to close the window after checking the new driver. For the latest 526 update, it didn't work at all. We might have to wait for more drivers since only two are compatible with our cards.

Hey, I'm just here to link to another thread that has a similar issue which may help in debugging, especially for @Kratos

FYI: I experienced fewer problems with the card, mostly not during reboots. Usually they'd begin after sleeping at least once. The driver and bus would reset, and sometimes it worked properly again. I lowered my motherboard BIOS to an older version and switched to the Studio driver—no issues so far, both during sleep and while awake over the past four days.

Hey everyone, I just upgraded to the latest W10 Build with the newest BIOS (my motherboard is an MSI X299) and drivers. It's been 9 days so far without any issues. I'm not sure if it's the BIOS, drivers, or the new software, but the longest crash-free period was 6 days before it jumped to 9. My guess is probably one of those updates. Give everyone a try and let me know what happens!
