Hello there.
I encountered an issue that might be related to software, but I'm checking hardware problems first.
My setup includes:
MOBO: Asus ROG Z790
CPU: Intel i7-13700k
RAM: 2x16 GB at 6000 MHz (XMP enabled)
SSD: 500 GB 960 EVO (installed with Windows)
GPU: RTX 4080
Power supply: Asus Strix 1000W ATX 3.0 (recently switched from Corsair RM750x)

I was attempting to play Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077 2.0. In Starfield, I experienced frequent crashes without any error messages, though performance remained decent at 70-95 FPS under maximum settings. Especially in crowded areas, crashes became more frequent. I disabled the MSI afterburner and turned off overclocking, but crashes persisted.

In Cyberpunk, the menu is completely unresponsive. Steam keeps reporting a "file missing" error, and the game crashes intermittently. Sometimes it launches without issues, but when I try to play, it fails again. It’s not playable at all.

Both games are installed on my new 990 Pro SSD.
Additionally, my Opera browser is also crashing and restarting frequently.

I’ve tried everything: uninstalled graphics drivers with DDU, reinstalled them, reinstalled the game, and finally reinstalled Windows. Still no improvement.

I ran a 3-minute benchmark test using BurnInTest and saw no errors. I suspect the problem might be with the new PSU, though my system boots normally and restarts randomly. I’m unsure if it’s a software or hardware issue right now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

PS: I forgot to mention that initially I used a 12VHPWR cable for the graphics card, which wasn’t reliable, so I switched back to the older 3 PCIe cables.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer! When you mention crash, do you mean the game shutting down or restarting the desktop interface? Unistall graphic drivers using DDU and reinstalling them, then unistall and reinstalling the game—this is my last resort. I reinstalled Windows too. That’s three steps. Where did you get the installer for your operating system? SSD: 500 gb 960 evo (installed with Windows). Was this from a previous system or platform?

by crash I mean mainly returning to desktop without any error messages, but the game would close. Sometimes the PC freezes and I have to restart it using the power button. My OS is installed on 500 gb 960 evo. I used this one with my old MOBO, cleaned the SSD thoroughly, and reinstalled the OS again with a fresh system. No, I didn't migrate my OS.

I did some research and it seems others experienced issues due to overclocked CPU and/or XMP enabled RAM. Right now I'm on call at my hospital. As soon as I get home, I'll try the fixes. I'll keep you updated.

Thanks, man. I've been working on this problem for about three weeks and nothing seems to work.

I updated my z790 mobo's BIOS today and turned off XMP. Before doing that, I ran Memtest on the RAM and everything passed without any issues. Still, I disabled XMP anyway. After playing Starfield first, I experienced a crash after just one hour. During that hour I traveled through planets and completed a main quest. When I tried to land in Atlantis again, the game crashed to the desktop.

The unusual part is that the Cyberpunk 2.01 patch was released, I installed it, and tried running the game three times. The third time it started and played for 30 minutes without any crashes.

I’m not sure yet if updating the BIOS, disabling XMP, or applying the Cyberpunk patch fixed the problem. I’ll keep running more tests to ensure stability.

A quick update. since bios update and disabling xmp I finally managed to play starfield nonstop for hours. Game crashed to desktop on rare occasions. But... Yeah there is a really stupid "but" here.
I updated the game to 1.7.36 version today and boom crashes are back again. I cant tell how stupid this situation really.

Another update and a potential fix might be possible, though the cost I could mention is unclear. I reinstalled my Windows OS onto a new SSD and readded games. However, after that, Starfield and Cyberpunk began to crash at startup. My CPU had AI overclocked through BIOS, so I reset it back to default settings. The system then ran smoother. At the Armoury Crate, my CPU power usage became more adaptable. The best part was that Starfield launched without issues and shaders worked fine. A benchmark in Cyberpunk (DLSS quality, all others maxed) averaged 110 FPS. With OC enabled, it reached 120-125 FPS, but the system still seemed unstable.

Thank you, I'll give it a shot too. What helped for me was reducing the GPU voltage.
