Hi,
I’m trying to confirm if this forum is the right place for my issue.
I’ve experienced my screen going completely black during gameplay, and the only solution is to press the power button to shut down.
What I’ve observed so far includes:
- First time it occurred while playing Path of Exile in summer last year; I assumed it was a game bug and stopped playing.
- It can happen anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour after starting a game, though being offline seems to be the same.
- Occasionally, the audio gets distorted, but sometimes it’s clear and I can even hear my character’s movement when pressing WASD.
- It has appeared in Genshin Impact, Borderlands GOTY Edition, Modded Minecraft, Totally Reliable Delivery Service, and Path of Exile.
- Not in Minecraft Windows 10 Edition, Pikuniku, or Clustertruck.
- I ran FurMark for hours without any issues, temperatures were normal.
- Cleared my SSD and reinstalled Windows, but nothing changed.
- Memtest86 reported no errors after four successful tests.
- The reliability monitor flagged many errors during those black screens, such as:
- Hardware error: LiveKernelEvent with codes: 1a8, 141, 187, 117
- dwm.exe APPCRASH

My system specs are:
i5 6600k
GTX 980 (Palit Jetstream)
Be quiet pure power 430W
Gigabyte GA-B150M-D3H
16GB HyperX DDR4 RAM

I searched for similar problems but found few threads with no resolution. Usually, people don’t post conclusions or upgrade their GPU unless they’re certain it’s the cause.
At this point, I suspect my GPU might be faulty, though I find those error-free FurMark runs odd.
I’d prefer not to buy a new one without being sure it’s the root of the problem.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I wasn't expecting a magic button, but I also wouldn't want to purchase parts without knowing if they'll fix the issue. I don't have much money. Are there other methods to check my PSU or overall system besides using games? Maybe a stress test?
