The game slows down when playing for an extended period in Red Dead Redemption.
Hello, I purchased the RDO standalone version on December 2nd and have been using it regularly. However, I'm facing an issue that has been bothering me for the past two to three weeks. I've been searching forums and trying various fixes, but this is my last known source of help.
The problem begins with stuttering after about 60 to 90 minutes of gameplay. Sometimes I can play for up to 120 minutes without any issues, but the FPS drops significantly—sometimes to half—and the game even stutters completely at times. There are also instances where the sound stutters as well. I checked the task manager, CPU usage, and temperatures, but no clear explanation came up.
CPU usage remains around 60%, while memory usage usually peaks at 6GB, but during stutters it drops to about 3-4GB. The highest CPU temperature I recorded was 69°C, and the maximum GPU temperature was 78°C. This seems normal for demanding games like Red Dead Redemption, as I've never experienced such issues in other titles I play, such as CS:GO, Valorant, Fall Guys, or Rocket League.
Most of the time, I play without background processes—no Chrome, no Spotify, no YouTube (though I did run them occasionally). The only background activity is Discord when playing with a friend. I use v-sync and have tried numerous solutions: adjusting video settings, tweaking memory page files, updating Windows 10, updating drivers, disabling HTEP, prioritizing the game in Task Manager, switching to RDR2.exe with high and real-time priority, using Windows 7 compatibility mode, enabling/disabling full screen, reducing cores via Task Manager, and changing the window borderless setting.
My system specs are:
- Corsair 600W power supply
- 2x Corsair 8GB DDR4 2666MHz
- Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
- Asus EX-A320M-Gaming
- Ryzen 5 2600 @ 3.40 GHz
- Kingston SSD 120Gb (Windows 10)
- Kingston SSD 480Gb (Red Dead Online)
- Two 500Gb HDDs
This situation is quite frustrating, and I'm hoping you can help me find a solution.
I'm using tools to monitor maximum CPU and GPU temperatures during gaming. This suggests an overheating situation might be occurring.
Regarding the stuttering, I need to check if it resolves by itself or requires intervention.
I believe the issue is resolved now. Someone on Reddit suggested a memory problem, so I performed a memory scan which showed everything normal. I adjusted some page file settings, assigning 12000-32000 to a single SSD and removing other drives. Last night I played for two hours straight, idled for an hour, then resumed and didn’t notice any stutters. Just to note, I’m using the latest HWMonitor version. Temperatures stayed consistent over time, except yesterday it was a bit colder with 1ºC lower than usual.
The stuttering stopped once I closed the game, but I didn’t reset anything—just kept playing because it kept happening after hours. It became annoying soon after.
