64-bit Windows can execute 32-bit programs. It removed 16-bit compatibility, which brings us back to the days of Windows 3.1. Old applications should ideally be run in DOSbox. Apple also discontinued 32-bit support with macOS Catalina, possibly causing the confusion.

The emulator isn't required if the game was developed for Windows XP or later. It may be needed for older DOS-based Windows, other DOS environments, or Unix systems. However, every GOG game has been verified on current operating systems.
