I recently purchased a GTX 1060 for my main PC and transferred my old HD 7970 to another machine for use as a secondary PC in the living room. My old PC specs were an Intel i5 750 (stock speed), an HD 7970 at 8 GB RAM, running Windows 10. I installed games to test it and Doom performed well with 80–120 FPS during long sessions. GTA 5 was okay for a few minutes but would crash afterward. There’s no CPU or GPU heating observed. I tried two different copies of GTA 5 and both worked fine on my main PC (6700K, GTX 1060).
What could be the issue?
Update: I discovered something else. After running Prime95 under stress, some cores would stop or slow down significantly—ranging from full load to around 20–30% usage. This happened consistently during the blend test and large FFTs. Smaller FFTs still caused stress as long as the system ran continuously. I managed without problems after about 12 hours of continuous stress, and the CPU never exceeded 70°C even under heavy load. No heating concerns at all.
Connect your old power supply to the new PC and verify the results, but I don’t recommend it. The most probable issue is the power supply itself.
the setup shows promising results. using prime95 caused some cores to stabilize after a short period, shifting from full load to partial usage (around 20-30%). this pattern appeared consistently during the blend test and large FFT analysis. minor FFTs still triggered stress, but as long as the system ran continuously, there were no overheating concerns—temperatures stayed below 70°C even after 12 hours without issues.
