Hello, when I double-click the program icon (Half Life 1), it displays nothing. A loading circle appears briefly near my pointer, but the game fails to start. I've attempted compatibility mode, yet it remains unresponsive. It functioned correctly previously. My operating system is Windows 8.1.

The original Half-Life game does not function correctly on Windows 8, regrettably. You can find details about compatibility here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/c...=Windows+8. However, it did work in the past, and a colleague of mine has it running successfully on Windows 8.1.

The game Half-Life 1 isn’t supported on Windows 8, according to a link from Microsoft. However, another user reports that it functioned previously and their acquaintance successfully runs it on Windows 8.1. It seems there might be a specific configuration issue, as this friend has been unable to get it to operate correctly, so he’s utilizing an older computer instead.

Would disabling DEP be helpful?

Several of my older games necessitate me performing that action. I’m simply mentioning it.

GmanBOSS:
Have you attempted to disable Driver Endpoint Protection?
Could you explain how to do that?

To access System Integrity Protection, initiate the Start menu by pressing the Start button. Locate the Start button icon, right-click on "Computer," and select “Properties.”

Navigate to Advanced System Settings. Administrator privileges are needed; enter the administrator password or confirmation if requested.

Within Performance, choose Settings.

Activate Data Execution Prevention by selecting the “DEP for all programs and services except those I select” option.

To disable DEP for a specific program, check the box beside the desired application and click “OK.” If the program is not listed, select "Add," browse to the Program Files folder, identify the executable file (ending in .exe), and click “Open.”

Confirm your selections by clicking "OK" in the System Properties window, and then click “OK” again. A computer restart may be necessary to complete the process.

Select the Data Execution Prevention tab and opt to enable DEP for all programs and services, excluding those you specify. To disable DEP for a particular program, check the box adjacent to that program and click OK. If the program isn't listed, click Add, browse to the Program Files folder, locate its executable file (.exe extension), and select Open.
