You're checking if your current configuration can handle Warzone or Vanguard smoothly. The upgrade to an i7-4790K adds more cores and clock speed, plus extra memory and cache. It should definitely improve performance, especially with the extra threads and faster RAM. The trade-off is worth it unless you're on a very tight budget.
I believe you'll be okay. Just avoid expecting the highest configurations—though I doubt that with that setup. I played Warzone using a 7600k and a GTX 980, which performed fairly well. I’m not sure how the 980 stacks up against the 1650, but I was using it at 2560x1080. You might consider switching to an SSD and adding more RAM before investing heavily in an older i7. Upgrading the motherboard, RAM, and CPU could also be feasible, possibly for a price similar to what you’d pay for a used 4790k if you scour eBay.
I believe a board upgrade could be an overreaction. I've searched for Z77 boards for a 3570k that's still available since the ASUS model failed. The options I've seen are either bundled with 3770k or 3570k in a full setup, or they're priced above $200. A direct match for the failed board is here: https://abbotsford.craigslist.org/sop/d/...22671.html. At this point, maybe a Z690 board plus a new CPU would be sufficient. I also recall Linus discussing this topic in a video long ago about the feasibility of older platforms today.
The 980 is just a bit higher than the 1650, that’s true. I was wondering if having 8GB of RAM would work for Cod, or if it’s really important for the game. I’ve seen some titles run well on 8GB even with triple A settings, while others become noticeably slower.
