Hey everyone, I own a Legendary Linksys WRT54G V3.1 with its full stock setup. I've seen how popular these routers are and why they're in demand: links from Ars Technica and Digital Trends highlight their strong market presence. Now I'm thinking about customizing or tweaking it instead of just using DDwrt. Any suggestions on what to do next?

So... You're considering doing nothing? Without installing DD-WRT or similar firmwares, you'll remain with old firmware and hardware. If your home network speed isn't faster than G (54 Mbps) and you don't share files between devices, you could use it as an additional access point for better Wi-Fi coverage. Or simply dispose of it.

Sure, I can refresh it. Just avoid keeping it linked to only a few items long-term. Would you like me to help expand its range with your existing router?

Yes, that's feasible. However, it must remain within G speed limits.

It's worth noting that the WRT54G uses the older wireless G standard, which limits its speed, coverage, and range compared to modern wireless AC routers. While it can help extend your network's reach, a 54 Mbps connection may not be sufficient for today's demands.

It looks like the stock firmware options are quite restricted. For extra capabilities, DD-WRT or similar third-party solutions work best. Many people suggest avoiding G, as it’s from 2018. Remember, the WRT54G was introduced around 16 years ago.
