Don't stress too much, I'm honest about what my CPU can handle. I'm just checking what fits with what I have right now. Many people are waiting until after a big new release in mid-2020 to finish up their builds, thinking they'll wrap things up by mid-2021 at the earliest. I'm just trying to make sense of any extra CPU work since my 5700G laptop is more than enough for everything else. My gaming performance is mainly limited by my GPU (GTX1660S), not the CPU, so I only really need a CPU upgrade when I switch GPUs. Right now it's tough to justify more CPU work because I don't want to waste money on outdated parts and just confirm today's prices. Intel seems to be entering the scene eventually, but I'm skeptical they'll lower demand much in 2022. Maybe a crypto crash or a better mining card could change things—making my current gaming cards less useful.
2700X remains a solid chip; I own one. I disassembled it and tested cooling setups using a TEC—things were exciting. Now it’s part of my HTPC gaming setup and I gifted it to my youngest son. It has 16GB of RAM and performs flawlessly. However, the GPU is a mixed bag. I bought a GTX 980 at OCN in November for $225. I’m keeping an eye out for another 980 since it promises better speed without breaking the bank. The newer 1660 GPUs still command higher prices just because they’re newer.
Yep - 2700X is still plenty for most requirements... memory controller is a frustration, but I'm having fun seeing how tight I can get the timings at 3200Mhz for now... so this has become "project CAS11", rather than "project 3600Mhz" The CPU will be fine for a while, I think: it'll only be a bottleneck when I eventually get my hands on a reasonably mid/high end Ampere card (or LoveLace at this rate?!?), but either way, I think it'll be a while.... I'm in the UK - we can't even get the GTX1660S from retailers any more... the only option is to throw yourself at the mercy of the scalpers: eBay is £500 ($675) new / £400+ 2nd hand (~$550)... absolute blind luck that I decided to get myself a stop-gap card at Christmas 2019 and reluctantly paid slightly over RRP for mine (£230 / $310 at the time!!).... These days, the only card that isn't silly money is the GTX1650 (~£200/$270)/... but most are £230.... i.e. exactly what I paid for my 1660super 2 YEARS ago.... but that's 85% of GTX970 performance. GTX1660S isn't bad: it's 6Gb GDDR6 + Turing-based GPU (same as RTX2000 series)... just with fewer cores and no ray-tracing.... it handles most titles with mid/high-detail 1440P just about okay, but in any of the FPS/competitive titles I need to keep the frame rates closer to the monitor refresh (170Hz), so I end up having to settle for some lower detail settings... e.g. Fortnite : "Performance DX12, Epic distance, Medium detail" - stays at 170FPS, but High details tends to hover around 160FPS.

Consented - random number... and even achieving 3800MT/sec CL14 or 3600Mt/sec CL12 wouldn't make much of a difference with that CPU+GPU setup: 3200Mhz (MT/sec) CL14 is actually quite strong performance – it sits right in the ideal range for the average 2700X. My goal is to extract as much value from the hardware before considering a more powerful build like a 5900X and 3080Ti (or maybe a 5800X3D).... It’s meeting my needs right now... I’m not a professional gamer, but I’m definitely more excited than most: the "Performance" settings in Fortnite provide a clear edge over the extra animations in DX11 and DX12. And while that odd glitch bothers me, it’s nothing compared to the issue of things feeling choppy. Once you’re used to smooth, high-refresh play, even 60fps lows become annoying and anything below 120fps feels bothersome, especially for games like Fortnite. (Or CS:GO – but that would drop to 180FPS on an overclocked toaster!)... If I’m not focusing on FPS and just enjoying the experience, then I’ll boost the visuals until they consistently hit around 60FPS or higher even at the lowest settings. And have fun with the kid—I’m a 10-year-old, but my 7-year-old was playing Fortnite and Minecraft on an old HTPC while his Xbox was elsewhere. He noticed it felt “more choppy” in Fortnite (and the distance to view wasn’t as clear in Minecraft). When I showed him how to choose between smooth visuals or speed, he picked the console and its auto-aim. He’s happy... for now. This old 3770K with a 4Gb GTX1050Ti and 16Gb Crucial Ballistix feels like it’s not much faster than his Xbox – just room to tweak the visuals for smoother performance. Plus, if he wants that on his own console, I’ll have to settle for an older model in the family room (like a 3570K with a GT1030).... I’m hoping the next time either of those HTPCs needs an upgrade, I can install a Ryzen 6 or similar APU and open the door to some really smooth low-profile builds.
