Not completely certain about why this adjustment resolved the issue, but using single or multiple pages in the scan feeder stopped functioning. During a careful check, there’s a white plastic stop that helps position your paper correctly before scanning. Until the paper reaches the optical lens, it isn’t detected until the roller lightly touches the start of each scan. My rollers are clean and there doesn’t seem to be any broken parts in the mechanism.

Placing a black PVC tape over the optical sensor makes the scanner think paper is always there, which fixes the problem. Any thoughts on the underlying cause so I can remove the tape?

Is the optical sensor/lens misaligned or needs adjustment? In other words, if the sensor isn't 'pointing' at the paper to detect its presence, then it perceives 'no paper'. The black tape is merely tricking the sensor into thinking it's detecting paper.
